The head of the hinge bar is loose, the barrel is sighted with a blade front and Model 1902 rifle rear and the action appears to function well mechanically. There is no inspection cartouche and the stock features a crisp circled “P” firing proof behind the triggerguard, a deeply struck “ORD” on the left side of the heel and “S” is on the right side of the toe. The toe of the buttplate has been ground flat. The walnut Model 1899 carbine stock and 1898 handguard rate about very good with a small chip in the toe, three 2” cracks around the buttplate and a few scattered light handling marks while the handguard has a 3/4” chip missing from the right rear corner and a couple short cracks at the barrel band. The metal surfaces are toning to a lightly-mottled dull gray patina showing a few small spots of pinprick pitting, a few light handling marks, small spots of light oxidation staining overall and a small area of fine cleaning striations on the top of the loading gate.
